Soul On Fire Facebook Cover

Hey Everybody!

How are you? These are tumultuous times we live in. All over the nation, people are protesting police brutality, racism, and injustice. The videos and coverage we’ve seen have my emotions all over to place. They have ranged from sadness to anger to disgust to dispair. If you’re like me at some point you asked yourself, “What can I do?” I decided to share a few ideas.

8 WAYS TO MEANINGFULLY SUPPORT SOCIAL JUSTICE REFORM

  1. Educate yourself on a particular movement or cause. Find out the facts of the situation and the people involved. If an organization is addressing that cause or causes research their agenda, how they plan to address the cause, what they hope to achieve from their efforts.
  2. Examine your own habits and beliefs. Look at yourself in the mirror and ask tough questions about your belief system. Examine how you were raised and if you in any way have ever contributed to the problem — even if it’s just ignoring it. If you find that you need to adjust take the time to do the heart work. Address your bias and dismantle those beliefs that shouldn’t be.
  3. Research the local presence. This basically means find out how that injustice is affecting where you live and how it’s being addressed?
  4. Take action in your community. If you see injustice, you and others can organize to take action or join an already existing organization.
  5. Donate to those organizations to help them fund the work.  Every organization needs funds to operate and do the work. Don’t ever minimize the difference your dollars can make.
  6. Go to a peaceful protest or demonstration. United voices are more likely to be heard. Add yours to the cause.
  7. Use social media to express how you feel and disseminate positive, useful, and accurate information. Information is power but it needs to encourage, educate, and inform. Let’s stay away from using our words and images for negativity and divisiveness.
  8. Volunteer your time. Whether you are on the front lines or behind the scenes change comes when a dedicated group of people decides they aren’t going to stand idly by and watch injustice continue to occur. People are needed on every level and by people, I mean you.

Whatever way or ways you decided to join the fight for justice and equality, I ask that you keep it positive and peaceful. Let’s also keep one another lifted up during this time. Change doesn’t happen overnight and the journey isn’t going to be easy.

I recently did a spoken word piece called “Soul On Fire” about the current events. Feel free to take a listen.
Be Blessed!

Thanks for A Great Book Signing

Author-Jae-Henderson-BookSigningI had a great time in Little Rock this past Saturday during the book signing for “From Here to There” by Jae Henderson and Mario D. King! Pyramid Art, Books & Custom Framing in Little Rock, Arkansas is one of my favorite places. It’s a book store and art gallery combined that featured some gorgeous art and products by African American creatives. Unfortunately, Mario couldn’t join us physically but thanks to modern technology, he still made an appearance from his home in Charlotte, North Carolina. The crowd was quite engaged and had plenty of questions for Mario and myself.

Today's Communique Pic

During the event, one young lady bought all nine of my titles at once. That was a first and I was floored by the gestured. Thank you to all of my friends, family, fellow authors and Sorors who attended.  Also, thank you to Today’s Communique for coming and taking a few pictures of the event. It was an exclusive preview. “From Here to There” officially goes on sale Wednesday, October 22, 2019 on Amazon.com. This book is the final book in the Where Do We Go From Here series, and we can’t wait to share it with you!

You can check out my other books here.

Other books by Mario D. King can be found here. His newest book is entitled, “Low Reign”.

Creative Corner

I wrote this about two years ago after my boyfriend made a surprise visit to the coffee shop where I was writing. I guess I was feeling inspired.

Ideal Weekend

He unsuspectingly walked into the coffee shop where she sat intently typing on her laptop and gently caressed her shoulders from behind before sliding his soft hands down her arms and engulfing her in a warm embrace. She didn’t need to turn around to know it was him. She hugged him back. His touch was certainly welcomed as she had been battling her depression all weekend and trying to hide that anything was wrong. She didn’t expect to see him until later when they met for a movie. He bent down and said softly, “Hey. I took a chance that you were here. I wanted to stop by and see you before I ran a few errands and to tell you I love you”. The side of his face was pressed against hers. She turned her head to kiss him on the cheek and then caressed it, “I love you, too,” she whispered.
He looked down at her tenderly. “Are you alright?” he asked with concern in his eyes. She shook her head up and down and said, “Uh huh.” Lies. He smiled and kissed her on the forehead before turning towards the door. “This is mine,” he said referring to her. “I’m going to make it official one day.” She smiled as she watched her boyfriend sexily saunter toward the door. Overcome with emotion her eyes began to well up with tears. When she was depressed she tended to cry easily. It was silly to cry over such a small gesture. I hate depression she thought to herself, but I really needed that. How did he know?

Husband Wanted  $2.99 Ebook on Amazon.com

Millionaire Grace Purdue never understood why her three beautiful, intelligent granddaughters didn’t have a husband. Every woman needs a good man by her side, especially a woman of means. So, when the publishing empire heiress died she made sure that her granddaughters wouldn’t stay single. In order for them to get their inheritance, they must each fall in love and get married in nine months. Easy….right?

Sheila, Leslie and Regina are wondering if their grandmother took too much medication when she wrote her will. If thousands of women across the globe are having a hard time finding true love and a husband, what made their grandmother think that they could in less than a year? But with a total of $45 million at stake, they are determined to shed their singleness or die trying. Little do they know that love, romance, deceit and deception run deep because money can get you what you want and a whole lot of what you don’t. Enjoy this entertaining tale as the Purdue women each take a different path that they hope will lead to meeting the love of their lives at the altar.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!!

HouseofMtenziI just wanted to drop in and say hello. One of my goals in 2019 is to be more consistent with my communications efforts. Wish me luck! 2018 has definitely been a year of highs and lows. There are a few I wish I could have skipped, but we don’t have that luxury. Here is the condensed version.

I was selected as the host of a revised and revamped podcast called 3BC ( 3 Black Chicks). It’s a roundtable discussion with myself and 3 phenomenal black women. So far, we have embraced the topics of being single and women in business. Please take the time to check it out and feel free to give me your feedback. Click here. That great banner above was actually featured on a billboard. People were driving down the highway looking at me!! Join our FB page.

My father, Gean Allen Henderson, was murdered. He was beaten and robbed the Friday before Father’s Day and died as a result of his injuries the day after Father’s Day. You don’t really know the impact of violence until it happens to you. Each day is a fight to remain whole when a large part of you has been snatched away.  In case you are wondering, the man who killed my father was caught and is now awaiting trial. I was told it could take two years or more to complete the judicial process but my siblings and I are dedicated to making sure that justice is served. I miss him terribly.

I received the award for Best Book Author Activist from House of Mtenzi (see first picture). I am grateful and humbled.

I was a featured extra in the Hallmark movie “Christmas At Graceland”. It was kind of cool seeing myself on television again. For those who don’t know, being an extra has become an unintentional hobby of mine. That speaking role is coming soon. I can feel it in my bones!

I was featured on the cover of the “Tri-State Defender Newspaper” promoting the Southern Heritage Classic. If you have never visited Memphis or attended an HBCU classic football game join us September 11 -15 2019. Inbox me for more info.

Mario D. King and I are working on the sequel to “Where Do We Go From Here”. We committed to three books, and we are working to make it so. “From Here to There” should be out in April of 2019.

Thank goodness there were more highs than lows. Love and joy still reside in my heart, and I am looking forward to a happy and prosperous 2019. Well, that’s all for now lovelies. May your 2019 be as awesome as you are!

Love,

Jae
