What Is Inspirational Romance?

God Is LoveWhen I first started writing a man asked me what genre were my novels and when I replied inspirational romance he replied, “Isn’t that an oxymoron?” This was the first of many such encounters where I found myself explaining what exactly inspirational romance is. The simplest definition I can give is that inspirational romance is the edgier side of Christian romance. I often push the envelope of Christian fiction and romance with the actions of my characters. However, it never ceases to amaze me that most people assume that romance ALWAYS includes sex and if I’m writing about romance/sex it must be immoral. It is times such as these that I take the opportunity to enlighten others.

1.God created sex. Sex itself is neither dirty nor immoral. It is a beautiful physical expression of love and/or desire two people have for one another and a necessary process for procreation that was intended between a man and his wife.  It is the context in which people choose to have sex which leads to immorality and chaos. All we have to do is look at all the calamity that has come into play from sex being used outside of God’s will to know this is true. There is tons of data about the astronomical number of children being born out of wedlock and the also astronomical number of STDs being passed around the globe. We can even go deeper and cite sources about the emotional and developmental challenges that children who do not have both parents in the home often face. This is not to say that we would not have illegitimate children being born or STDs if everyone having sex were married. People have been having sex outside of their marriages for eons but I’m willing to gamble that the numbers would be far less than they are now.

2. Romance is not synonymous with sex. Although I recognize that within the literary industry when you say romance novel it is a given that it will contain sex and probably lots of it. However, when you add the word Christian or inspirational it becomes more about faith and less about sex. This is actually getting back to the truer sense of the word romance. Just as you can have sex without romance you can have romance without sex.  When I looked up the definition of romance this is what I found:

ro·mance—(rōˈmans,ˈrōˌmans/) noun— a feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love.

By definition romance has to do with love not sex and God in His purest form is LOVE. Therefore, it makes perfect sense that I am able to write an inspirational or edgy Christian romance novel and explore all the facets of love and the emotions associated with it.

In each of my novels I display the love that God has for us and because of His infinite wisdom we are able to give this love to others in many ways–from acts of kindness to intimacy. I hope you’ll read my novels and allow me to spread a little love and God  in your lives.

What I Learned In 2013

Bye Bye 2013

Bye Bye 2013

I can’t say that I’m not happy to see 2013 go. I am. It was the most challenging year of my life. However, I won’t focus on the negative events, I will focus on what they taught me.  Here are a few things I learned:

When I need Him, and even when I think I got it covered, God will show up and show out.

Fasting and prayer changes things.

I am a better multi-tasker than I once believed.

When things get tough, you’ve still got joy. Hold onto it. Get away from people who try to steal it.

I actually do have a nurturing side.

I will fight fiercely for those I love. Especially, when they are not getting the treatment I think they should.

The human body and spirit are amazing. Even when you are too tired to keep going, they will keep going when necessary.

Know when to rest. It is essential to good mental, emotional, and physical health.

People you least expected to be there for you, will be there for you.

People can and will disappoint you. Expect it, but don’t let it make you bitter or angry.

I’m a pretty good speaker when I prepare properly.

People can give you hugs without ever touching you.

I cannot do everything. I must accept it and ask for help. It makes life muuuuuuch easier.

Learning to love people in spite of their flaws will make everyone’s life easier. People will not change unless they want to.

Compromise can make most people happy.

Everyone is entitled to have their opinion. Wisdom is knowing when to listen to it and when to ignore it.

All men want sex. You have to find the ones who want more than just that.

Never argue with an idiot. The world is full of idiots.

Laughter can diffuse almost any situation.

My family is AMAZING!

I have WONDERFUL readers.

What doesn’t kill you not only makes you stronger but wiser. However, you may walk away with a few scars. Cherish them because they are proof that you survived.

I now look forward to a glorious future.

I wish you a happy and prosperous 2014 with lots of good books to read.

MIFA No-Go Gala Recommends Someday

12_nogo-bannerIt’s not everyday that a respected nonprofit like MIFA adds your book to the list of suggested reading for one of their major fundraisers. I am proud to announce that MIFA has listed my first novel “Someday” in their 26th Annual No-Go GaSomeday_Coverla Book Club. This “stay at home, read a good book, and make a donation fundraiser” brings in thousands of dollars each year for their many charitable programs such a meals on wheels for seniors, home improvement projects for seniors, emergency services for families in need, college preparation for high school students, and more. MIFA has been supporting the independence of vulnerable seniors and families in crisis through high-impact programs in the Memphis community since 1968. They serve over 55,000 people each year, and I am happy that I can do a small part to help.

I have fond memories of MIFA. At the age of 15, they gave me my first job! I worked as a page at the Main Library, in Memphis, when it was located on Peabody Ave. During that wonderful summer, I eagerly caught the bus to my job and I loved it! I remember shelving books and clipping articles for the archives in the Memphis Room. On designated Fridays, we met for life skills training and they would give us our checks. You should have seen us teenagers running to the bank to cash it when we were dismissed. LOL Who knew that the young lady who got paid to put books on shelves would one day have her own books housed on those very shelves. Now instead of clipping articles about others, I’m clipping articles about myself! I’ll never forget that experience. It taught me responsibility and the pride that comes from earning your own money. I came from a low-income single parent home so the money definitely came in handy. THANKS MIFA for supporting our community, supporting literature, and supporting one of your very own local writers. The seed you helped water way back then is still IMGthriving today.

Can you believe that I still have my bus pass! PRICELESS!

Visit the No-Go Gala page and see my book recommendation and others. Yes, I know I suggested it but they didn’t have to select it. You can also suggest your own recommended reading and PLEASE make a donation. Every little bit helps and you’re giving more than money. You are giving HELP and HOPE to people in our community when they need it the most.
