It’s not everyday that a respected nonprofit like MIFA adds your book to the list of suggested reading for one of their major fundraisers. I am proud to announce that MIFA has listed my first novel “Someday” in their 26th Annual No-Go Ga
la Book Club. This “stay at home, read a good book, and make a donation fundraiser” brings in thousands of dollars each year for their many charitable programs such a meals on wheels for seniors, home improvement projects for seniors, emergency services for families in need, college preparation for high school students, and more. MIFA has been supporting the independence of vulnerable seniors and families in crisis through high-impact programs in the Memphis community since 1968. They serve over 55,000 people each year, and I am happy that I can do a small part to help.
I have fond memories of MIFA. At the age of 15, they gave me my first job! I worked as a page at the Main Library, in Memphis, when it was located on Peabody Ave. During that wonderful summer, I eagerly caught the bus to my job and I loved it! I remember shelving books and clipping articles for the archives in the Memphis Room. On designated Fridays, we met for life skills training and they would give us our checks. You should have seen us teenagers running to the bank to cash it when we were dismissed. LOL Who knew that the young lady who got paid to put books on shelves would one day have her own books housed on those very shelves. Now instead of clipping articles about others, I’m clipping articles about myself! I’ll never forget that experience. It taught me responsibility and the pride that comes from earning your own money. I came from a low-income single parent home so the money definitely came in handy. THANKS MIFA for supporting our community, supporting literature, and supporting one of your very own local writers. The seed you helped water way back then is still
thriving today.
Can you believe that I still have my bus pass! PRICELESS!
Visit the No-Go Gala page and see my book recommendation and others. Yes, I know I suggested it but they didn’t have to select it. You can also suggest your own recommended reading and PLEASE make a donation. Every little bit helps and you’re giving more than money. You are giving HELP and HOPE to people in our community when they need it the most.
